Herfurth, Northampton, Ma. Started pitching in 1925 at age 14 and won
Northampton town Championship. In 1927 he won his first western Ma.
Championship and in 1931 he won his first of three New England titles. Between 1931 and 1941 he was usually among the top four in both the Ma. State and the New England meets. From 1934 through 1941 he averaged approx. 66%. He used mostly a ¾ turn. Between 1941 and 1965 he only played a few times because of back trouble. In 1965 he started again and since that time he has averaged better than 60% in 25 tournaments. 6 Ma. State Meets, 7 New England Meets, 5 Ma. Opens, 4 Keene Opens and 3 Maine Opens. In 1939 he tied for 1st place in the New England Meet with Ken Hurst of Rhode Island and in a seven game playoff he averaged 77.1% against 76% for Hurst, losing 4 and winning 3 for a 2nd place finish. In 1971 he tied for 1st place in the New England Meet Mel Merritt averaging 70.6% for 15 games and then losing out in the playoff to finish in 2nd place. |
