| Carl
York was born in New Sharon, Me. On Dec. 4th, 1944, the youngest son
Laura Candage and R. Bryce York. He is on of 8 children, 3 brothers and
4 sisters. He went to school in New Sharon, Me. And lived there all his
life. Carl began pitching horseshoes in 1963, at the Phillips Old Home
Days, where Pat Gallant talked to him about pitching in tournaments in
Oxford. He and his father went to a tournament and he has been an avid
pitcher ever since. Carl and his father pitched in Florida together
some, and attended one world tournament in 1982 in Huntsville, Al. Carl
has attended several other world tournaments, as well. Carl has collected over 35 first place trophies, 24 second place and 20 third place. 5 are first place State Class Championships. His best one being in 1998 with and average of 55.73%. In 1979 he received the Most Improved Player Award. He has served on the Hall of Fame Committee for many years. Has been a New England Delegate, State President for 2 years, Vice- President for several years and has been Tournament Director for the Kennebec Horseshoe Club since 1985. Vice President of Maine Association. Vice President of the Augusta club for 6 years. Class A State Champion of Maine 1998, with an average of 55.73%. Carl continues to be a Tournament Director in Augusta Me., and has attended several more world Tournaments. He has received several more awards in local tournaments. In the last 3 years he has not only played in Maine, but in Florida and South Carolina. Carl married Jane Robertson in 1980 and acquired 2 step children, Karran and Jessica. He has two children of his own, Diane and Daniel. He also has 9 Grandchildren, 6 girls, and 3 boys. He has retired after 30 years with the State D.O.T. |
