Edward Kienia better known as Doug, now living at Swamp John Road, in
Wells Me., Doug was born on February 8, 1958, in Nashua New Hampshire
but was raised in the Kittery Me. Area. He attended school in Kittery
and Wells High School. He married Terry Moore on June 21, 1980 and they have one child, (Gregory). His working trade is Assistant supervisor at Hussey Seating Co. in North Berwick Me. His other sports or hobbies besides Horseshoe pitching are Basketball, Softball, Metal Detecting, Fishing and Hunting. Doug started pitching horseshoes in 1970 when he was 12 yrs old, and has been going strong as a competitor ever since. His constant determination to dominate a game and beat his opponent was always a characteristic and a factor that made him the champion that he was and still is. Wherever he competed in New England he was always a credit to our sport, and his record will attest to this fact, as you will note by his accomplishments so far. Doug played as a junior in our state in class A from 1970 through 1974. He won the championship every year. In 1974 no juniors competed, so he kept his championship by default. In that same year he played in the world tournament at Keene N.H. and we will come back to that episode later on. Now a few facts on those 4 years as a Jr. (70) 5-0 1st 53.0%, (71) 4-1 1st 73.5% H.G. 91.7%, (22 for 24), (72) 5-1 1st H.G. 82.3% 73.0%, (73) 8-2 1st 71.45% H.G. 84.5%. Now we will skip (74) and pick up his records as an adult from (75) through (86), all in class A in our state tournament. He never finished lower than 4th. In all of these 12 years of pitching he won the state title 3 times, 2nd 5 times, 3rd 3 times and 4th 1 time. In the world championship as a Jr. In 1974, he pulled the upset of the whole tournament, not loosing a game in that 8 man round-robin. He defeated the defending champion Dead Eye Williams from the west coast, who had come east with a stack of credentials, and expecting an easy victory. Here are a few stats of that game which I'm sure will interest you. The game was played on Aug. 3rd 1974 in Keene N.H., Wheelock Park, on court 24 in game #4. It took 156 shoes to play the game Doug-137 ringers-------------Dead Eye-134 ringers " 59 doubles------------ " " --- 58doubles " 87.8% ------------ " "----85.9% " 50 points-------------- " "----40 points And they had 45 (4 deads), what an incredible game for all of us to observe and cherish. As a Jr. Doug also won the New England championship 4 years in a row 1970 - 1973. As an adult in the past twelve years he finished in the top 10 in almost all tournaments. |
