Greene began his horseshoe playing in 1976. He is a member of the
Bennington Horseshoe Club in Bennington, Vermont. Gale and his wife Susan live in Shaftsbury, Vermont. They have two sons and three daughters. Gale's first NHPA tournament was on July 25,1976 in Bennington, where he played in Class A, taking 3rd place. In May of 1978, he won his first Class A tournament. In the years to come, Gale has participated in many tournaments throughout the New England's. Gale traveled in 1990 to his first World Tournament in Stonemountain, Ga. Getting through the first two rounds of round-robin play, he made it into the Championship Round and finished in 4th place with a 5 wins 4 losses, averaging a 68.0%. In 1994, Gale traveled to Syracuse, New York for the World Tournament. He finished in 4th place in Class A-3 Section 4. In 1991, Gale joined the Nashua, NH. League. He received the Sportsmanship Award in that league. In the Vermont State Tournament, from 1976 through 2001, he won the Vermont State Men's Class A State Title four times. The first in August 1988 at Bennington with 5 wins and 1 loss, averaging 55.9%. The seconded was in 1993 at Milton, Vermont with a record of 7 and 0, averaging a 66.7%. His high game that day was a 76.4%. In 2000, at Bennington, with a 7 and 0, averaging 76.72% (his personal best average in a state tournament), with a high game of 80.9%. In 2001, at Middlebury, Vermont, claimed the title with a 7 and 1 record, averaging a 71.81% - high game of 83.3%. Gale has been 2nd place 10 times and 3rd five times. The Vermont Doubles State Tournament in 1991 at Sodbusters, Gale finished in 4th place with Bill Bearor with a 3 and 2 record. Gale is no stranger to the New England Tournaments. He participated in 1977, and then again from 1986 through 2000. Gale's best placing is one 3rd place and four 4th places. In 1988, 4th place with a 4 and 3, averaging 62.2%. 1994, 4th with a 5 -2, averaging 69.58%. 1996, 4th with a 5 -2, averaging 65.34%. 1998, 4th with a 4-3, averaging 72.05%. His best average was in 1999 with a 74.68%. In 1991 at Augusta Me., he finished in 3rd place with a record of 4 and 3, averaging 70.18%. In 1991 - 92, Gale was instrumental to get the New England Tournament in Bennington. He helped to install more courts, a new fence, lights, and the large scoreboard, and in 1992, at Bennington, the first New England Tournament held there, Gale finished in 6th place with an average of 67.9%. Gale is well known throughout New England as a competitive pitcher. |
