Clark of Auburn, Maine started pitching Horseshoes in 1928 and has
actively participated in all Class "A" State Tournaments since
1930. During the middle 30's he was one of the original members that
helped negotiate for the land and help build the Auburn Horseshoe Club
courts on the river-bank in back of Bailey's garage in Auburn. In 1951 due to an unfortunate accident he lost two fingers on his right hand. He then started to pitch left-handed but decided to try a glove on his right hand, he found that it worked. His hand was very sensitive. In 1960 he was very active in helping to build the courts in Oxford, on land that was made available by Mr. Herrick. He was President of the Maine State Horseshoe Association in the early 60's. He always spread the good word about horseshoe pitching wherever he went. 1966 found Clark involved in the erecting of the first clay courts in Maine at Marcotte Park in Lewiston with time, money and know-how. Clark was the first State Champion to be on television being televised from WLBZ-TV Bangor Maine in 1965. He and Thurlow Lord put on a 25 point game exhibition. Clark winning 25 to 5 with over 65% average. In 1939 Clark played two exhibition games with Ted Allen, then World's Champion. In the first game Clark got 31 points and pitched a 63% to Allen's 71%, at one point in the game Allen had Clark 43 to 9 but Clark got to 31 before Allen got another point. The second game was Allen's 51 to 17, in this game Clark pitched 60% and Allen pitched 80%. Clark has freely given of his time and talent to go all over the State putting on exhibitions to promote the game. |
