Throughout Don's horseshoe pitching years he was a very strong competitor. He also was an advocate for the promotion of the game. Don finished close to the top in many Class A State Championships. In 1989 and 1990 he went on to win the State's Senior Class A Division.

Although Don has stopped competing in tournaments because of health problems, he continues to lend his support to both the Keene and Nashua Horseshoe Clubs.
